There are still many contradictions with respect to accessibility and inclusion in most buildings. Efforts are being made to make them more accessible, but many fail to be ‘exitible’. Are they safe in case of emergency for people with reduced mobility?

This visual story highlights this contradiction. Although ramps facilitate entry, stairs remain the fastest route out (and speed is critical).

Fortunately, progress is evident in some forward-thinking buildings, where designated safe refuge areas are now available to safeguard wheelchair users in emergencies. Happy End? Not quite yet, but we’re moving in the right direction.
